BABETH RAMBAULT

Reliefs & contrebas

We see, before we learn to talk, and we only see the things we look at. Looking therefore means choosing. Together with all the things we know or believe. I return in the storm of 1999 that rips out trees hundreds of years old like rotten teeth. And can make a corrugated iron roof dance. Roof upon roof. I’m in orange alert mode, paying careful attention, stressed at the wheel. A luminous apparition like a white lady crosses the road. I try not to hit something which is in fact nothing but an inoffensive sheet of polystyrene.

During the winter of 1358 a considerable pile of faeces, mud and filth formed and grew by the day. To the extent that those on foot and horseback were unable to leave their homes without exposing themselves to the difficulties, accumulating dirt on their bodies and clothes.

Today being surprised by a pothole in the road is a minor problem. The public road repair service soon has it surrounded with a barrier standing at eye-height. We no longer have to inspect the ground. If we do so, it’s because we’re looking for something. “The ground is closer than paper”, that phrase by E. Jackson, I think I found in a sewer. I often nail the object of my attention to the object of my distraction.
