ARQUITECTURE & LITERATURE II – EN FRANÇAIS

Meeting between writers and architects to discuss, debate and reflect on the idea of construction. Constructing a text, a building, a thought, a place, a space… Do similarities exist between these processes of creation? Writing about the city means projecting and building, and projecting a place is to some extent starting to write its future. Are a draft text and a sketch one and the same thing?

 

LUISA ETXENIKE Born in San Sebastián in 1957. She has published the books: El detective de sonidos (2011), El ángulo ciego (Euskadi Prize 2009), Los peces negros (2005), Vino (2000), El mal más grave (1997) and Efectos secundarios (1996), in addition to the short story collections Ejercicios de duelo (2001) and La historia de amor de Margarita Maura (1990). Her short stories have been included in numerous anthologies, outstanding among which are: Un deseo propio. An anthology of contemporary Spanish writers, published by Inmaculada Pertusa and Nancy Vosbrug. She has translated works from French by Jacques Roubaud (Algo negro), Claude Lanzmann (Alguien vivo pasa), Virginie Linhart (Después de los campos, la vida) and Jean-Michel Maulpoix (La cabeza de Paul Verlaine). She has been running a creative writing workshop for some years now. She is director of the literary festival, Un mundo de escritoras. In 2007 she received the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters distinction from the French Government. In 2013 the San Sebastián City Council awarded her its Medal for Citizen Merit.

 

BOUBACAR SECK Citizen architect, that’s the way Boubacar defines himself, a French architect of Senegalese origin educated at the Bordeaux and Stuttgart schools of architecture. Literature is one of his great sources of inspiration. A romantic architect, Seck speaks gently and poetically about his profession: When asked what he looks for, he says “I try to help people to live better”. For Seck, architecture has a revealing and anticipating function. “Answering questions that have still not been asked”; he nevertheless believes that architects are not necessary and that architecture is not urgent. “Urgency is an act of citizenry”. Boubacar Seck published “L’amère patrie” in 2008, ed. Baudelaire. He is a Member of the Board of Directors of SOS Racisme, and recently joined a selection of young African architects represented at the 2014 Architecture Biennale in Venice in the frame of the Young Architects in Africa competition, where he received an honorary mention for his primary school work in Manecounda, Senegal
